I hail from St. John’s, and am incurably homesick at all times. Looking at Gates’ photos, I can’t help but become enticed by the gorgeous, colourful city, as well as the unforgiving, rugged exterior of the East coast of Newfoundland. His alluring images urge you to go to the island, while also warning you that you may never want to leave.
Stating that his primary goal is to capture the true emotions and personalities of his clients, Gates creates original concepts while pushing the boundaries of the average portrait. He approaches each photo session with a fresh outlook, always striving to create something unique and exciting by blending fine art and photojournalistic styles.
