Put Your Party on a Pedestal: Cake Stands September 20, 2010

I love cake stands, cake pedestals – whatever you wish to call them.  They add a lovely touch to any dessert or lucky item you choose to place atop them.  Cake stands also add dimension and height to your refreshment spread.  The eyes eat first, and a food spread is always more appealing when it’s presented with creativity and care.

Cake stands have been gaining popularity over the past few years, and unique versions are popping up all over the place.  Handmade and vintage stands abound on Etsy, with my personal favourite creator being Burlap and Blue.

New York-based Fishs Eddy offers coloured glass and aluminum cake stands in their online shop here.  These stands are ultra modern and come in a wide variety of unique, eye-catching colours.  I especially love the jadeite stands – so different!

If you’re in the market for a snazzy new cake stand but don’t have the means to invest in one, Joy’s Hope offers a detailed, step-by-step tutorial on how to make your own here.

Sweet’s Renee Elliot also offers a tutorial here. Both Joy’s Hope and Sweet Spot employ the same basic concepts in crafting their DIY cake stands, but the end results differ in their style and equipment selection.

One of my favourite cake stands from my small, but growing, serving ware menagerie is from Anthropologie‘s 2009 collection and is plated with 24K gold and platinum.  Well, la de da.  Thankfully, I got mine on sale!  *gloat*  If they had more than one in stock when I bought mine, I would have purchased more as gifts.  Cake stands make beautiful gifts – especially for the special someone who hosts social gatherings on a regular basis and likes to switch up the look of their serving ware and refreshment spreads.

Please do share photos of your favourite cake stands and post them on our Facebook page here.  I would love to see them!
